NYON, Switzerland -- A UEFA disciplinary ruling on Tuesday banned fans of French club Lens from buying tickets for Champions League away games at Leipzig and Liverpool. The decision followed incidents at Club Brugge last week when Lens supporters lit dozens of flares and threw some toward rival fans and the field, forcing the match to be stopped briefly. Lens lost 3-0. The club was already on probation for fans lighting flares and fireworks at a Champions League game at Slavia Prague in September. UEFA said its appeals judges imposed a ban on Lens selling tickets to fans for two Champions League away games. The sanction will be served when Lens play at Leipzig on Nov. 24 and at Liverpool at Anfield on Jan. 27. A third game ban is deferred for a two-year probationary period. UEFA also fined Lens 80,000 euros, about 89,000 dollars, for charges of lighting and throwing pyrotechnics as well as acts of damage. The ruling targets club ticket sales rather than a blanket travel ban, but it will sharply limit organized away support. UEFA treats pyrotechnics as a serious safety issue because flares create smoke, fire risks and projectiles that can harm players, officials and spectators. The Club Brugge incident showed how quickly such behavior can affect match operations. Lens must now manage fan conduct during the probation period, while supporters face uncertainty over travel plans for the two away fixtures.
