Ranji Trophy 2026-27: Harsh Dubey's 9/53 and Salil Arora's Fourth Ton as Bowlers Dominate Day One
Vidarbha's Harsh Dubey took nine wickets for 53 against Madhya Pradesh and produced the standout individual performance of the first day of the fourth round of the Ranji Trophy 2026-27. It is the best bowling figure of this round so far — no other bowler has taken more than five. At the other end of the spectrum was Punjab's Salil Arora, who walked in with his team reeling at 71 for five and carried them to 276 for five with an unbeaten 111. Between them, the two innings set the tone for the day: bowlers on top, and a handful of batters showing the patience to hold an innings together.
Madhya Pradesh were bowled out for 209, and the distribution of that total is striking: after Dubey's nine, every other bowler combined for a single wicket. In other words, 156 of those runs came in a stand that Atharva Mahajan anchored with a composed 85. Wickets kept falling at one end while Mahajan held firm at the other, and that combination dragged MP to a respectable score. Nine-wicket hauls are rare in first-class cricket; dismissing nine batters in a single innings is usually the brightest day of a bowler's career, and it was no surprise that Dubey dominated the conversation at stumps. Vidarbha closed on 56 for four, still 153 runs behind, with their top order having struggled and the first task on day two being simply to survive.
Punjab's day began badly, losing five wickets with only 71 on the board before the innings had even reached three figures. Salil Arora and Sanvir Singh then put together an unbroken 205-run stand for the sixth wicket to lift the total to 276 for five. Arora was unbeaten on 111 and Sanvir on 100, both set to resume on the second morning. For Arora, this is a fourth century in six innings this season — roughly a three-figure score every other innings. That kind of conversion rate is uncommon in first-class cricket, and it meant the post-play discussion was less about Punjab's brittle top order and more about the form of their middle-order batter.
Assam were bowled out for 135, with Bhatkal taking five for 35 and Shetty five for 53 — the two of them accounted for all ten wickets, leaving the rest of the attack empty-handed. Karnataka replied with 180 for two by stumps, a lead of 45. Having bowled Assam out cheaply, Karnataka will look to bat them out of the contest; Assam need early wickets on day two or the match will drift quickly away from them.
The fastest collapse of the day came in the Bengal and Rajasthan camps. Bengal were bowled out for 143 and Maharashtra lost two wickets with only 21 on the board — 12 wickets in a day, with both top orders failing. Rajasthan fared worse, dismissed for 78. Himachal Pradesh replied with 153 to take a first-innings lead of 75, with 20 wickets falling across the day. Abhishek Kumar's five for 14 was the most economical five-wicket return of the round, yet it went largely unnoticed in the day's narrative. Ankush Bains' contribution of 56 was also significant, as that innings underpinned Himachal's advantage. Rajasthan's task on day two is clear: erase the deficit and then build a partnership big enough to matter.
Services were bowled out for 266, but with an unusual feature — Rajat Paliwal finished unbeaten on 111. The entire side was dismissed while one batter remained at the crease to the end, which says as much about the lack of support at the other end as it does about his own innings. 266 is a par total rather than a collapse, and if the bowling unit applies pressure on day two it could still prove a difficult score to chase down.
Jharkhand produced the slowest cricket of the day: 37 for three in 25 overs, roughly 1.5 runs an over. A scoring rate that low usually points to play interrupted by rain or bad light, though no official confirmation of conditions in that match is available. Whatever the cause, Jharkhand's priority on day two is to occupy the crease and build partnerships, because a cluster of wickets from such a modest base would put the innings under immediate pressure.
This season features 38 teams across four Elite groups and a Plate Group — eight teams and four matches per Elite group, six teams and three matches in the Plate Group, for a total of 19 matches in this round. Jammu & Kashmir are the defending champions, having won the title last season, and will be looking to strengthen their position in this round. In the Plate Group, Arunachal Pradesh's Salil Malhotra is also in the news — a different player entirely from Punjab's Salil Arora, and the presence of two similar names in the same round is exactly the kind of thing that causes scoreboard confusion.
The broader takeaway from day one is that batting was not easy against the new ball. Five innings were bundled out for under 150, two matches lost 20 wickets in a single day, and several top orders failed outright. That shapes day two: teams with a lead will want to enlarge it, and teams behind will want to wipe out the first-innings deficit. Performances like Dubey's and Arora's are a reminder that in this format a single session can turn a match, and the opening day of round four served as the latest example.
